MINISTRO DE HACIENDA DE CHILE
¿Ministro o Dueño de Fundo?

Para entender los comentarios despectivos del actual ministro de Hacienda, Jorge Quiroz Castro, hay que recordar de dónde viene. Nació en Valparaíso en 1962 y creció en una familia de clase media en la Quinta Región. Estudió en el Colegio Alemán de Villa Alemana, pasó por la Universidad de Chile y terminó con un doctorado en la Universidad de Duke. Es inaceptable que una autoridad que comparte estas mismas raíces pretenda hoy mirar al país desde un pedestal de superioridad, olvidando por completo el esfuerzo de la gente común.

Tantos cartones universitarios no borran los tropiezos éticos y judiciales que marcan su carrera. En abril de 2003, Quiroz fue procesado por fraude al Fisco en el caso MOP-Gate por las platas de su consultora Gerens, llegando a pasar noches preso en el anexo penitenciario de Capuchinos. Aunque la Corte Suprema lo absolvió años más tarde argumentando una falta de dolo, haber estado tras las rejas por graves acusaciones contra el bolsillo de todos los chilenos le quita cualquier autoridad moral para salir a dar lecciones de ética o descalificar al resto.
Bájese del Pedestal, Ministro
Al ministro se le olvida que es un empleado de la nación y que su sueldo lo pagamos todos con nuestros impuestos, por lo que su rol es servir con humildad y no mandar con soberbia. Tener títulos importantes no le da derecho a usar un lenguaje ordinario; la capacidad técnica jamás va a reemplazar a la decencia y al respeto que exige su cargo. Este país no es un fundo, ni las autoridades son sus patrones. Si no tiene la capacidad de dirigirse a la ciudadanía con dignidad y verdadero espíritu de servicio, lo correcto es que deje el puesto a alguien que sí entienda lo que significa trabajar para el pueblo.

Minister or Landlord?
Greetings to all.
To understand the derogatory comments made by the current Minister of Finance, Jorge Quiroz Castro, one must remember where he comes from. He was born in Valparaíso in 1962 and grew up in a middle-class family in the Fifth Region. He studied at the German School of Villa Alemana, attended the University of Chile, and ended up with a PhD from Duke University. It is unacceptable that an authority who shares these very same roots now intends to look down on the country from a pedestal of superiority, completely forgetting the effort of common people.
So many university degrees do not erase the ethical and judicial stumbles that mark his career. In April 2003, Quiroz was indicted for fraud against the Treasury in the MOP-Gate case involving the funds of his consulting firm Gerens, even spending nights jailed at the Capuchinos penitentiary annex. Although the Supreme Court acquitted him years later, arguing a lack of criminal intent, having been behind bars over serious accusations against the pockets of all Chileans strips him of any moral authority to come out and give lectures on ethics or dismiss everyone else.
Get Off Your Pedestal, Minister
The minister forgets that he is an employee of the nation and that we all pay his salary with our taxes, so his role is to serve with humility and not to rule with arrogance. Having important degrees does not give him the right to use vulgar language; technical capability will never replace the decency and respect that his position demands. This country is not a private estate, and authorities are not its bosses. If he lacks the ability to address the citizens with dignity and a true spirit of service, the right thing to do is for him to step down for someone who actually understands what it means to work for the people.
