Justice without Privileges
Greetings to everyone.
The citizen proposal to create a National Registry of Human Rights Violators responds to the need to punish with the utmost rigor the crimes committed during the dictatorship. Members of the armed forces applied with malice counterinsurgency techniques learned at the School of the Americas, originally designed to fight a military enemy. These practices resulted in grave violations of the fundamental rights of the civilian population, including systematic torture, inhuman abuse, rape, and crimes against humanity. Institutional violence was not satisfied with killing unarmed civilians, but turned against its own ranks, murdering comrades in arms and their own commanders-in-chief who remained loyal to the constitution.
For this reason, the initiative strictly demands that those convicted of these crimes receive no state benefits or preferential treatment during their imprisonment. It proposes the total elimination of their pensions paid with public funds, as well as the end of special penitentiary facilities that feature amenities and installations such as tennis courts, etc. The proposal stipulates that these individuals serve their sentences in common prisons and under the same regime as any other inmate, eliminating the historical privileges that worsen the pain of the victims.
Mercy at the End
However, this proposal is supported and, from a writer's sensitivity, an invitation is extended to look at this pain with compassion for the elderly inmates who today suffer from a terminal illness. It is well known that this does not erase the gravity of past mistakes, but in those definitive moments, the declaration is made that justice be done by allowing them to leave in the peace of their homes alongside their families. From a personal opinion, human life comes into the world with a noble and dignified purpose, and the body of a terminally ill elderly person should not be allowed to fade away like waste in abandonment, as a reminder that justice can be firm without ever losing affection for humanity.
